Organizing Jewelry-making Tools with Vintage Tins

toolsorganized1

The husband’s law books has taken over the tiny craft / office room (sob! sob!). Thus, I find myself beading and crafting in any space I can find around the house. Sometimes in front of the TV, on the dining table most days or even outside the house in the late afternoons.  I have to carry my supplies all over the house and it’s a mess, to say the least.

Ok, I hate to admit this but I have become quite the craft supplies hoarder. Over the years, I’ve learned new and interesting crafts and have collected quite a number of craft supplies. They have in fact taken a life of their own with my craft organizers overflowing with stuff. Yikes!

Organizing and decorating has become a bit of a challenge. Recently, I’ve been looking for something to help me organize my jewelery-making pliers. I’ve seen a lot of inspirations on Pinterest and almost tried installing the magnetic knife strips but thought I didn’t want something permanent like that on the wall. The organizer racks or bench are very pricey online. Some retail as much as $300! it’s not only pricey, I’m not too keen on the industrial design of these racks. I wanted something I could carry around, but it has to be pretty.  It should be something that can be an organizer but pretty as a decoration as well (and not cost me $300!) .

Here’s my idea: Vintage-inspired Tins!

I like the versatility of these cans. I can use them as decorations and organizers all together.

What do you guys think? What other ideas can you think of to organize jewelry-making pliers?

Updating the Memory Box

IMG_1226

I have about a week more to go before dragging myself back to work. I’m enjoying my summer vacation too much I  wonder if I could ever get the strength to wake up early again.

While on this long summer break, my diet seems to be in a bit of a vacation too. Yes, diet just went out the window  this entire break. I’ve been feeling kinda sluggish and thought I was pregnant. We’ve been trying and really praying for another baby…probably in God’s own time it will happen.

Not to feel too depressed about the whole thing, I took out my little girl’s memory box. It was actually the husband who insisted that we create a Memory Box for our five-year old.

When the husband was still trying to pursue me, he showed me an old heavy box full of stuff from his childhood. He even  had his school ID in kindergarten! He had pictures of his 4-year-old self making silly faces, an article from the newspaper with his picture and name on it as a contestant in a Spelling Bee Competition..precious, precious memories to last him a lifetime.

Looking at him with his memory box and smiling from ear-to-ear, I said to my single-ready-to-get-married self that I was going to marry this man with the memory box! Tee! Hee! He had me at ‘memory box’.

Please do’nt stop reading, I know it’s too cheesy and too over-the-top but I will stop getting too melodramatic. Trust me, it’ll get better in the next sentences.

Fast forward today, our little lady has her memory box too. We had actually changed it to a bigger and more sturdy box. We’ve kept her kindergarten class picture, her first school ID (too cute!) her pretty onesies when she was just 3 months old… Ah, so many keepsakes that bring smiles to our faces.

Memories to last us a lifetime.

Do you keep a Memory Box?

The Goal This Summer is To Find That Table

wateringcan

I find myself drawn to vintage-inspired watering cans and tiny tin buckets lately. Come to think of it, I guess I like Old English Interior Decors. I have posted about my little collection of candle lanterns (7 and counting) which ties that up together with these tin cans (just 4 and still counting).  It just ht me now that I probably do like country-vintage inspired decor and style. But not too over-the-top though. I still gravitate towards clean-minimalist design.

But the reason I scoured the little shops and malls in Cebu looking for these cute buckets and watering cans is not for interior decorating. I needed some containers for my craft supplies. I’m going to try my best not to use those hideous plastic containers I had for years. I wanted something inexpensive but pretty. Now, where can we find an inexpensive, not hideous-looking containers these days in Cebu?  I found these cans in 3 different stores and I knew I had to have them because they called to me, hahaha!

Organizing the tiny craft room is getting crazy in our little house. It’s been over a year since we moved to our own place and we love it here (sans the terrible traffic :) ) We still have not finished organizing our craft/office room. To say that it’s a mess in this tiny room full of books and craft supplies is an understatement.  It’s getting crazy lately, what with the husbands law books piled up on the table among the bead stash and some felt fabrics.

There is a table underneath all those craft supplies and law books. The goal this summer is to find that table.

I’ve categorized this also under the P100 Challenge. The blue watering can is only P70.00 and I am more than amused.

DIY Tote / Eco Bag

I’ve been pretty busy prepping for my two craft classes next month. Yes, craft classes :) The husband always teases me about my being OC when preparing for something. I don’t listen to him. He teases me about a lot of things. Although, there might be some truth to it.

The past couple of days, I’ve been thinking about making my own box for the kits and then I thought about a tote. Of course, a tote would be perfect (until I come up with something else). I’ve been meaning to make those eco friendly totes that you see in the grocery.

If you’ve been bestfriends with the sewing machine for years, skip reading or just close your eyes. I’m just a newbie and it’s horrible, ahahaha! If you and I are on the same boat, read on.

This afternoon I took on this project. For a while, the sewing machine and I were not on speaking terms. Until I figured out it was my threading. Silly me. I’m rather new to sewing and the sewing machine and I were not properly introduced you see.

I bought the fabric at Curtains and Trims at SM City Cebu for only P30-35 / yard. They call it the non-woven fabric.

The tote I’m making is  a bit small since I’m making it for the kits I’m providing for the craft classes. The beads, tools or felt fabrics should fit perfectly in this tiny tote. You may adjust the size according to your preferred size.

For the body of the tote, I cut 2 pieces of 11 x 13 inches.

For the handle, I cut 2 pieces of 2 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches. For purposes of this tutorial I used different colors of fabric and thread although I think it came out pretty with the white and pink :)

Sew.

Here’s the handle sewn and turned right side out.

eco4

Take 1 of the body pieces, folding the top about half an inch, sew one handle like so. This is how you should sew the handle. To sew it securely, I tried sewing it this way.

eco5

This was my first attempt so the first try, I didn’t do the square with an X.

eco6

Then sew the top like so. At this point, you may want to iron the fabric since it’s quite stiff. Please take note though to put another fabric, probably cotton would be best over this kind of fabric as it easily sticks to the flat iron even at its lowest heat.

eco7

DO the same with the other piece and sew them together.

Here’s my finished tote. Forgive me, it’s rather untidy as I was in a hurry to take pictures. Didn’t bother cutting the loose threads.

Please share your pictures if you’re making this.

The Hunt For The Little Black Book Is On

My annual ‘hunt-for-the-little-black-book‘ is ON. If you’ve read that post I did last year, you know it’s this time of the year I look for the notebook.

I carry a little black book in my purse. You have to read the post here to know the reasons why. Come to think of it though, my reasons are a little bit different now. Sure, I want to write my ideas for my little online shop there or some of my bucket lists, etc. That sounds really great but it seems like this year I’ve gone from happy, crafty, do-it-all mommy to happy, contented, still-trying-to-be-crafty AND REALISTIC mommy.

Why the shift? I’ve realized that work keeps me from doing a lot of the things I’ve been planning to do this year: for the little online shop and for the family. It’s really a challenge to squeeze everything in my daily schedule but I still manage.

It looks to me now that keeping all the lists makes me look like I have everything together, NOT! :) Nevertheless, it helps me keep everything in a wait list sort of way. At least! The more staright-forward reason really — I have been humbled. Officially I am now admitting that I just might me getting just a little bit older. Hence, FORGETFUL! Nope, the tablets do not work for me to remind me where to go or what to buy in the groceries.

I have to see my handwriting, feel something that’s tangible. In other words, I might be the only one in this digital age tablets who still carries a little black book in my purse to jot things down every so often. When I’m lost in a bookstore and read something I want to remember, or got an idea for a jewelry or a craft I want to do, I grab my little black book and doodle something. Yes, I just might be the only human being still doing that.

Thus, my little black book is my sought-after personal year-ender event. I just made that up but if the celebrities and everyone else has some sort of year eneder events, then this is among mine, I know! (Tee Hee!).
